Pictures of the Week – Friday, April 20th
We’ve spent another week enjoying springtime in the Eastern U.S. Although rain and warmer temperatures do bring out the mosquitoes in this region, that didn’t stop us from camping out and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
From wildflowers to creepy, crawly critters, there was a wealth of subject matter through the viewfinder. Here are the shots we liked the best.
Atop The Pinnacle
Thanks to the suggestion of our Little Rock Couchsurfing host, we spent last Friday morning hiking up the East Summit Trail at Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Roughly 1 hour and 3/4 of a mile after we began (and after scaling a huge incline of boulders), we reached the top.
The view from the top was breathtaking. Gently rolling hillsides. Farmland. The Arkansas River. The long, strenuous hike was absolutely worth the view from the top. And Knox was in heaven! While we sometimes struggled to find footholds, he happily bounded up the boulders, nimble on 4 paws. Though he did lie down and pant heavily at the top!
A Snake In Our Midst
After we descended Pinnacle Mountain on the West Summit Trail, we had to take the Base Trail back around to the truck. This fairly level path through the woods gave us a chance to look a little closer at our surroundings, including all of the critters and wildflowers filling the springtime woods.
Luckily, the snake we saw in the water wasn’t too concerned with us. As long as we did no more than take his picture, he didn’t mind us getting a little close.
After The Rain
Sunday was a gray, rainy day in this part of the Midwest. We were under a tornado watch for most of the afternoon, though we didn’t see much more than periods of heavy rain. For campers switching campsites and needing to set up a tent though, rain was bad enough. Setting up a tent in a storm SUCKS! (Though we did manage to get the ground cover down, tent up, and rain fly on in about 5 minutes…the threat of rain is a good motivator.)
At the end of the day, the rain finally subsided and the clouds rolled away. The sun peeked through and we were greeted with a beautiful rainbow. A great way to end an otherwise pretty ugly day!
Let’s hope these April showers bring some incredible May flowers!
